BT Email doesn't hope when AVG VPN is On

BT Email will only start if I turn off AVG VPN.  Then VPN stays off until I turn it on again.  My previous VPN product gave the choice of turning it off for a few minutes and then it would automatically start up again.  How can I deal with this?
