I'm having the same problem as well. I disabled the realtime protection and run the update, enaabled realtime protection again and it still said 'Unable to start scan (Failed to send command.)'
Carried out a full computer scan yesterday 16 June 2016. Upon completion of scan, one threat was found. This was described as a possible trojan horse. It was placed in my quarantine. I then deleted it. Following that, I cannot carry out any further scans. A message pops up 'Unable to start scan! (Failed to send command.)'

I disabled realtime pretection, but it says I am up to date, so I can't update.
still not able to run scan.
