Thanks Rajarajan . I have corrected the SMTP host in AVG to be smtp-mail.outlook.com. This error crept in while I was trying different options and could not have caused the reported error. I have also tried the "Secure to dedicate port" option. I have also tried whether the connection works if I tick the "This server requires a secure connection" option in Live Mail. None of thisor any of the other options works and I still get the same Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E with socket error: 10061 (the connection to the server has failed). I will be unable to look at this problem for the next week due to other commitments and in the meantime I will have to revert to not scanning my Hotmail emails with AVG. I will also try to see if Microsoft can offer any clues as to what is going on. Best wishes. Jonathan.

Upon analyzing, we could find that the host in AVG for SMTP is incorrect .We suggest you to use the correct server and also to try the "Secure to dedicate port" option.
