Cannot stop whole computer scan, can't repair through control panel, can't uninstall avg free win 10

Please uninstall this update from the control panel and turn off the automatic Windows updates temporarily. To uninstall windows updates, please follow the steps given below:

whole computer scan hangs at 1%, tried stopping process through avg, and task manager.  tried repairing through control panel, and uninstalling through control panel but neither would work.  Help!
