I would refrain from multiple postings if my problem is solved. Since I could not solve despite the advice I had to continue to seek AVG's assistance as pledged.

As advised by Mr. Ranjani, I tried updating according to the procedures - i.e. updating on the files from the directory. The pop-up msg tells of no update files available.

I am very sorry to inconvenience everyone and I hope you will kindly help.
