Hello Deirdre,

Thank you for the clear explanation.
If the update from windows settings doesn't get successful then the issue is actually with windows update services.
Please open RUN command window by pressing windows and R keys together.
Type as "services.msc" without quotes and press enter key.
On the services scroll down for "windows update" and right click on it.
Select "Start" or "Restart" which is highlighted and then initiate windows update from control panel settings.
If it doesn't get through then it is necessary to contact Microsoft support to fix the issue.
Deirdre, many people have had problems updating windows 7. Avg will not be able to fix that. Suggest you try the steps exactly as listed in the following link to see if thet fixes it. If it does you will be fine after that.

I purchased Driver Update which helped for a short time, after which the process to update windows was hanging. I have consistently changed the windows update settings which do not appear to work. In desperation I deleted driver updater as I have been at my wits end trying to get a fix. I have not been able to update windows for nearly 12 months!
