Hello Andrew,
You seem to have installed a free 30 day trial version of AVG instead of a free version. I would suggest you to uninstall the expired trial version and install the free version. You can uninstall AVG trial version as suggested in this article http://avgclick.me/UninstallAVGAV .

Then download and install AVG Antivirus Free from our official downloads web page: https://www.avg.com/en-ww/download

AVG Free edition.  Open the program and try to scan—just get a window trying to get me to buy update.Tells me my trial period has expired.  I don't want a trial period.  I would like functional AVG Free edition.
