I'm trying to set up the anti-theft feature in avg protection on my android phone.
I've got to step 3 where I need to login. I created an account and am ae to login to the website but I can't login to the app. It says, "login failed" every time. I am using the same email address and password but it only works on the website and not in the app.
What do I need to do to login to the app?

In this situation, we have to perform app reset of AVG Antivirus app and check the status.
Get into Device Menu -> Settings -> Apps/Application Management -> AVG Antivirus-> Tap on clear cache & Clear data -> Force stop the app once.
Restart your Android device and check the status with AVG Anti-Theft log in on the app.
Please make sure usage access is granted for AVG Antivirus.

I was able to clear the cache, the "clear data" button was greyed out so I couldn't click on it.
The force stop button. Is also greyed out and cannot be pressed.
I restarted the phone but it didn't make a difference, I still get the same error
Yes I've done steps 1 and 2 and I'm stuck on step 3.

This issue should be resolved by complete re-installation. Follow the below procedures:
1) Uninstall all AVG apps installed in your device. To uninstall the AVG AntiVirus just follow these steps:
- go to your mobile device´s settings > Security > Device administrators > uncheck/deactivate the "AVG AntiVirus".
- now go back to device´s settings > Apps or Application manager > Select and uninstall "AVG AntiVirus".
Repeat this procedure to uninstall any other AVG app. ( if there are some AVG Cleaner, Alarm clock xtreme, AVG Secure VPN )
2) Once you uninstall all AVG apps make sure the "AVG" account located in your "device´s settings - Accounts" disappeared. (this may differ based on os version and device type, examples: Settings - Cloud and Accounts - Accounts or Settings - Accounts)
3) Re-install all AVG apps and sign back
This will fully reset the communication between the device and the portal.
