Initially, please check & let us know whether you recently used your AVG TuneUp to put some of the background & startup programs to sleep (Particularly, the Open Office program).
If you have, refer to this article to awaken them from the 'Rescue Center'.
Once you've awakened it, restart your computer & check if the issue persists.
Keep us updated.
I no longer can open Word or Open Office files as AVG appears to scan the files and this takes eons.
I have switched off scanning, but this does not seem to solve the problem.
