Can't open multiple programs on my computer

I have AVG Tune up installed on both of my Dell PCs.  Have loved the program, but today we started getting an error message anytime we try to open up any document in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.

"Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\ (followed by name of location\document).  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

We are able to upload the documents into Google drive and read them, so I don't think it is the individual documents so much as the applications that are used to open them.

When I try to open up Word or Excel directly, the applications are non responsive.

I have uninstalled Microsoft office and reinstalled it, ran all updates on the computer, checked to make sure all drivers are up to date, deleted the printer and all of the software that goes with that.  I don't know what else to do.

The odd thing is that it is happening on both of our PC's.  One is used for my work, the other is used by my kids for their things.  they are not networked together.  The only thing I can find in common is the AVG Tune up.  (I did check to make sure that Microsoft office was awake first).

Are there any setting in Tune-up that I need to look for?

We also had a new modem/router installed today.  Wi-fi seems to be working great on all devices throughout the house, but I guess that could be a factor too.
