Sorry to hear about this. Please uninstall and reinstall email protection in AVG Free Antivirus by going to AVG->Antivirus->Menu->Settings->Component->down arrow next to Email Protection component->Uninstall component. Then reinstall it and check if your Thunderbird works fine.

I am using AVG Free Edition 17.5.3022 and definitions 170811-8.
I use Thunderbird email 45.8.0
I am unable to receive, or send emails. When I disable email protection on AVG. I am able to send, and receive emails.
Any help would be appreciated.
