After about 20 hours, the scan finally stopped–so there does not to be any remaining issue. Thanks for your comments.
I have used AVG Free for years. AVG reported today that it could identify no AVG components on my system. So, following the written instructions, I uninstalled and reinstalled AVG Free. Then an AVG scan reported that there were no threats on my system. However…without my prompting, another AVG scan ensued, and after many hours it persists, and I can find no way of stopping it.
