When you say "I have selected the option in settings that puts me at risk for malware", do you mean in AVG Anti Virus settings or the Chrome settings? Please let us know the exact error message if it generates any when you try to access chrome.
Did you disable AVG protection temporarily and check to narrow down if it is caused by AVG? If not, please right click on AVG system tray icon and toggle the On/Off slider to disable AVG protection.
