Change Email Address

I changed my email address followed by clicking the link to varify but the system gives a message, that it has been unable to make the change??!!.
Retried after 48 hours "with the same new email id", and i get a message saying the new email id is already in the system, try another email id??!!. However i wish to use the one i entered earlier, so am baffled what to do??!!, thanks.
