Charged without my knowledge

I tried a free trial AVG product think it was VPN noticed an old email saying I had been charged £49.95 so contacted them and was told that as I never activated I would be reimbursed. Now I have received an email saying since the 30 days have expired ( it was some time back in 2018) they won't reimburse me but have kindly stopped my renewal. 
I have never activated or used this program and was unaware I had subscribed to it for whatever reason in fact as far as I was aware I had made sure I would not be charged but its so long ago I can't prove anything.
I feel AVG are using underhand tactics to literally steal money in my case can anybody advise me on what I can do next, please
