Choosing and installing AVG protection

I am currently using a system (Russia based) which I would like to change and have been recommended AVG by a friend. Q1. Not sure whether I should use the free installation or whether I should have something I have to pay for if it is better. Incidentally, my current contract is for 3 PCs. Q2. If I download an AVG product do I have to first disconnect my existing protection or can I download the AVG product first and then dispose of my current system? I am afraid my current system won't allow a new anti-virus system in.
