Close a persistent AVG notification

Recently, the AVG periodic notification
"Some programs are slowing down your PC…"
appears without a possibility to respond or close. (No X-mark at top-right.) Unfortunately, it covers a strategic patch of my screen. To eliminate it I must restart the computer. This is very annoying. Please propose a solution. Thank you.
