I followed microsoft link exactly both auto and manually. No luck. More strange things!! I downloaded the WIN 8.1 upgrade assistant EXE file would not work. Downloaded something innocent VLC video player EXE file. Worked fine. Something a bit different about the WIN update It flashed the blue 8.1 logo then just nothing. When I tried running it again got a window message saying "Windows setup aleady running". At the moment just giving you all the info I can. I am truly thankful for all the suggestions you make. So at the moment I cant get AVG running or remove or renew it. I cant load another virus or malware programme or find out if I can update Windows but I can install a new viseo player.

Please do not forget to take a backup of your registry ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/322756 ) before you make any changes to your PC.
All fixed I hope. Found out by searching the web that this is a big problem at the moment. A series of malware intend on stopping any attacks. The advice was use Windows Defender Offline. Downloaded it and it prepared a bootable DVD with the malware killer. ran a quick check then booted the computer again and AVG was up and running. Since, no problems.

My AVG 2015 free has stopped working. Windows is telling me to start it but when I try avg just does not load. I''ve tried lots of ways to load it Icon EXE file. I downloaded a new copy but the exe file would not run. I tried to remove the old version but that would not run.It is as if something is stopping me run any AVG file. Other files are working ok. Please can anyone help. Win 7 AVG has been running for years
