Hello David,
I certainly understand your concern but unfortunately we didn't implement the option to control the updates of our AVG program by the user because Updates are highly mandatory for a security programs inorder to protect your PC. So it is really dangerous to disable the updates or scheduling it. Thank you.
I always want to suspend all other activities on my PC when installing or updating software. Because AVG Free 2016 does not allow me to control when a software update is installed, I have reverted to AVG Anti-Virus Free 2015 (x64) 2015.0.6173.

With AVG Free 2016.0.7134, I noticed that Advanced Settings no longer provide an option to disable automatic updates of the application. Only automatic updates of virus definitions and automatic scans have disable options.
It is very important to me to limit updates to when they are convenient and do not interfere with other time-sensitive activities I might be conducting on my computer. This is also a security issue. During an update of AVG, there is a period when AVG is not functiontional. For that reason, I download a complete installer for an AVG update, disable my Internet connection, and then install the update. Only after the new version is fully functional do I re-enable my Internet connection.
Thus my question: How do I disable or otherwise control updates of the AVG Free application?

That answer is not acceptable. The security risk during updating – when AVG is not fully functional – could easily be greater than the security risk of delaying the update one or two days. Furthermore, there is the possibility of a financial risk if an update to AVG delays my entering a transaction at my bank or mutual funds.
David, You're obviously not an AVG happy camper!.. Have a look @ this article (http://avgclick.me/AVGfeedback).
