Thanks, but I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and that found and solved the problem. nice to know what the casue was though.

AVG reports that it is "Secured" but constantly renotifies me, to the point where i had to turn off the notification ping and popups to save my sanity. it shows up in the report like this:

Secured

06/05/2014, (TIME)

the AVG chat was no help, as they disconnected me several times without awnsering, and i would really like to know how to kill this thing.

Hi Shan,

Something in your PC is repeatedly trying to download infection, check/disable all addons, uninstall all unused/unknown applications.

If it doesn't help provide us with Gmer result (http://kb.avg.com/articles/en_US/How_to/GMER-Scan-Result/).
