Have had the exact same issue (AVG Pro and CuteFTP 9.5), and weirdly enough only on one of two laptops both running Win 10.
Using the above description to exclude the CuteFTP exe-files worked fine for me.
Pro-tips:
Make sure you make an exception for the exe-files in the install folder and not on the shortcuts or it won't work (on my machine that's in C:\Program Files (x86)\Globalscape\CuteFTP).
Make sure you make an exception for both exe-files in the install folder: cuteftppro.exe and ftpte.exe. One is the program itself, the other is the transfer engine.
That did the trick for me, if you still don't get it to work; Consider doing exceptions for the DLL-files as well, that is what I would have tried next…
Ah, thanks Sean - another user of CuteFTP which appears to have started crashing recently… I hadn't thought of disabling AVG - lo and behold when I disable AVG, it no longer crashes…
If this continues, I might need to find an alternative anti-virus program…

Hi, AVG is making Globalscape Cute FTP Pro v9.0.5 crash. The only way I can use the program now is to disable AVG. When I tried to allow Cute FTP through the Firewall, AVG completely froze before I could even browse to the app. Cute FTP isn't on the list of programs so I'm wondering if that could be the problem.
Are you seeing this whole conversation or just the original question?
When I disable AVG I don't check the box to disable the firewall and then it works fine. Does that mean it's not related to the firewall? I did add Cute FTP as an exception to the firewall and also AVG prompted me to add som FTP file sharing folder or something.
Having the same issue here, if a solution isn't forthcoming I will have no option but to change my AVG to something else

Hello Sean,
Did you add the application in firewall exceptions and other components exceptions as well as described in the article provided by Kishore in his last post?

I don't know what you mean. I only disabled it for 10 min each time for testing puposes. Whenever AVG is on, Cute FTP crashes.
Sorry, I missed your previous post where you said that you have already added it to exception but it didn't help.
In this case, we request you to get connected to our additional support.

No, that is not right. I have said "I added Cute FTP to the list of allowed applications but that didn't help." and "and also AVG prompted me to add som FTP file sharing folder or something." I searched for cute FTP in the program folder and selected the .exe to add to the exception list. And then AVG promted me to add some othe FTP folder to the list as well.
