day 1- something like a scan is running non-stop in the background. How do I stop it ?
After putting up with my roaring PC all day, last night I went to AVG to run a smart scan and incredibly the PC got quiet. What does that tell you?

May I know what are your referring to when you mention that computer got quiet? After running smart scan is the computer working properly? Have you encountered this issue before?

Please ensure that the AVG program has the latest patches applied to it.
Open AVG program - click on refresh icon beside virus definitions, at bottom left corner - Restart computer after successful update & check.

I believe you have restarted your PC, if not please restart your PC.
Afer the restart check for the most utilized background apps.
