From your description, it seems that the scan is stuck. In this regard, we'd suggest you to try repairing the AVG program once & then restart the computer to check if it helps.

When performing a deep scan the program reaches 45% and seem to lock on a single file. It has been running for over 5 hours and has not changed from the last file for 3 hours.
This has happened the two times I've tried to run a deep scan.
Reapir instructiobs are for A pc. I'm using an iMac, operating system macOS 10.14
