Please get into AVG Antivirus free 2017 update settings by clicking on "Menu" from dashboard and then select "Settings–>Update".
Please update manually and check whether it displays the message as "Unknown error" for the update.

I'm using AVG Antivirus Free version 17.6.3029 ( build 17.6.3265.218 ), release date of 8/31/2017.

From 9/28/2017 to 10/2/2017, there were no virus definitions update. That was a long time, based on the past. On 10/2/2017 and on 10/3/2017 there were updates. The program states the updates were received, but the date it states they were received is still 9/28/17.

I reinstalled the program using Antivirus_Free_ 1892.exe. I restarted, but the 9/28/2017 date remained. Why doesn't the date change to the date of the update?

My Proxy Setting is "Direct connection ( no proxy )."

Hello J Jeff,
I'm glad to know that the recent AVG updates has been fixed the issues and you will be continue using AVG Antivirus Free for your computer protection. I understand, how convenient was the scan logging features. However, you still can find the AVG scan reports. Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista: C:\ProgramData\AVG\Antivirus\report
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG\Antivirus\report. You can also open the AVG user interface on your desktop, and click the gear icon next to Scan Computer > Select Schedule Scan> report files. Feel free to contact us again if you need any further assistance.
Best regards,
Alok.

Thank you Sir / Madame.

The problem was solved by one or both of my following two actions. Your suggestion to change from automatic updates to manual updates, or me unchecking the Silent Mode box. Your suggestion didn't generate an "unknown error" message as you expected, and it didn't change the definitions update date from 9/28/2017 to 10/3/2014. But when I unchecked Silent Mode and restarted my pc after midnight today, the update receive date date changed to 10/4/2017, which is today. All is well with the AVG FREE program on each of my three pcs.

In addition, there was a virus program file update yesterday, which was accepted by my three pcs today. In the previous program file update of 8/31/2017, the ability to see when the last scan was completed and when the last definitions update was received, disappeared. So from 8/31 to today, end users didn't know when they did their last scheduled or manually initiated scan. Today's 10/3 update fixed that glitch.

The only feature that I'd like to see returned to the program, is a scan date logging feature. In a previous forum answer to my question on this matter, it was stated that logging is no longer available. Why would you remove such an important feature, part of all previous AVG Antivirus FREE versions?

I have been using your FREE version for as long as I can remember. It has always intercepted a virus or malware, before it delivered it's destructive payload. In contrast, when I subscribed to another antivirus program for a year, it allowed a nasty malware to invade my pc and hold me hostage until I was able to find my way to the system restore program and revert back to a date before the malware was missed by the program. Today we have a term "ransomware" for such an attack. I didn't pay a ransom, because I was able to use my Windows 7 OS to bypass the malware's "demands." I never had 38 virus on my pc and never paid a penny to regain it's control. Rest assured that I will continue to use your A/V programs, for as long as I use pcs. I've tried the other free programs, and nothing compares to yours!!! Keep up the good work.
