Hello Howard. Please note that it is not possible to defragment the C:/System Volume Information and C:/hiberfil.sys files because
1) C:/System Volume Information is used by the Shadow Copy service, which in turn is used by the System Restore facility and by Windows backup. They cannot be defragmented. You can cleanup old shadow copies using "Disk cleanup" as instructed in http://bit.ly/1jgFgNu . Or you can turn off System Restore altogether like this: http://bit.ly/1RgsdNG
2) C:/hiberfil.sys file is used by the hibernation facility and cannot be defragmented on a running system. You can only delete the file, like this:
Please open "Command Prompt", and then click "Run as Administrator". If User Account Control (UAC) asks you for permission, permit the Command Prompt to run.
Enter "powercfg -h off" (without the quotes).
Reboot. The "hiberfil.sys" file will be automatically deleted.
I am running Windows 8.1.
There are 3 system files that will not defrag.
1 C:/System Volume Information file having 17 fragments, about 5.9 Gig
2 C:/system Volume Information file having 2 fragments, about 1.3 Gig
3 C:/hiberfil.sys file having 2 fragments , about 6 Gig
This accounts for about 12% fragmentation on a 500 Gig C: drive.
How can I defrag these 3 files?
