Please be informed that this feature was implemented for enhanced the security and features of AVG Antivirus in new version.
If you disable this feature then the Anti-theft feature will work effectively.
If the option is disabled then you will repeatedly get prompt to enable it and the prompt cannot be stopped as it is highly mandatory feature.
That doesn't really answer Philiip's question, which is also my question.

Why does AVG constantly keep asking me to set it as my "Device administrator"
I feel that this gives AVG all/too much power over my device but still it keeps asking to be activated.

Yes, that's right John but after the recent update release we have made changes for this prompt.
The change is that the prompt appearing to enable will not appear if customer enable it once and disable it.
Please update AVG app and check whether the issue persists.
