Clare, Which version of Windows OS are you using?. From Win 8 onwards Windows Defender was re-classified into an AntiVirus prog which will conflict with AVG when it's installed therefore Defender should be disabled.

Today I discovered AVG had disappeared from toolbar and control panel. I downloaded it again and was told it had downloaded and installed. But after restarting I discovered it was still not there. Windows Defender seems to think AVG is there and is keeping me secure from viruses. Can anyone advise me?

Alan, it's windows 10. I've had it for a while, but never had AVG disappear like this before. I'll try installing AVG yet again as a first step. I'm a bit scared of removing windows defender and being left with no defence whatsoever.
