Disappearing icon

We're glad to look into this & help you, Dan.
Would you be so kind to share us the screenshot of the icon with the exclamation mark on it for better clarity?

Let's reinstall AVG Antivirus FREE and check if it resolves the issue.

Refer the article for uninstalling and installing the program.

Thank you, Bharath. That did the trick.

But now, there's a white X in a red circle over the icon. Presumably, it's because AVG claims to have found security risks and privacy issues. If that's correct, AVG needs to offer the user a way to dismiss these alerts. Right now, the only options are to Resolve or to close.

Glad to know that, Dan. Thank you for updating the status. Have a great day!

The AVG icon in the system tray has suddenly disappeared. I clicked on system tray's customize to make sure it was still set to Show Icon and Notifications. It was. Task Manager shows two entries for AVG: AVG Internet Security Service and AVG Software Analyzer. Rebooting did not solve the problem.

Thank you for sharing it as requested, Dan.

I request you to check if you see the message 'You are fully protected' in the AVG interface.

If not, let us know the disable component and we'll help you further.

Awaiting your response.

Yes, of course. Why wouldn't it still be there?

I've been in computers starting with IBM mainframes since 1973 and I've seen a lot of crazy things over the years, but this one is certainly a contender for a prize. I uninstalled AVG - it's no longer in the list of programs that can be uninstalled - but the icon was still there and there were 5 or 6 entries for AVG Internet Security Service in Task Manager, as well as one for AVG Software Analyzer. I rebooted and the icon appeared - without the X. I clicked on the icon and the interface came up, showing I had basic protection. Task Manager shows 3 entries for AVG Internet Security Service and an entry for AVG Software Analyzer. And I can't try to uninstall it again because, as I said, it no longer appears in the list of programs that can be uninstalled. It's possible that if I try to install AVG, it will tell me that an older version is installed and will offer to uninstall the older version first. But I prefer to KNOW that AVG is completely off my system before trying to install it again.

Thank you for updating the status, Dan.
The X symbol will stay on AVG system tray icon unless you resolve or close the results.

I did close the results. The X is still there.

I'd forgotten about AVG Clear but found it on my computer after my last post (and before seeing yours). I ran it and it did indeed remove AVG. I then installed AVG and all is well.

Case closed.

Thank you to all who helped!

Not exclamation mark - an X.

User-added image

It's the 2nd icon from the right.
