Disk writes during scan

com.avg.daemon takes over the machine and I cannot use it meaningfully.  How can I control it.
How can I control my schedule on a Mac running AVG.  There is no facility for unchecking archives.

There are no scheduled scans in the current version and scanning of archives can be disabled in the settings. Open AVG AntiVirus >> click on the AVG AntiVirus menu in the main bar >> Preferences >> Scanning >> uncheck "Scan archives".

Bala, it's been a week since the original post.  Any progress from the "senior team" in responding to my question about excessive disk writes during a virus scan and possible impact on SSD longevity?

Hello Mike,

Please be informed that it is not recommended to perform disk defragmentation for SSD.
I have forwarded the case to senior team inorder to get detailed information on this matter.
Please keep checking the post to know about the status.

Mike,
I apologize for the delayed response. The drive writes are related to unpacking archives (e.g. zip, rar, 7z…). AVG has to unpack it, scan it and then delete temporarily unpacked files. Please disable scanning archives in AVG by going to AVG->Antivirus->Scan setting (symbol of gear, bottom of the window)->Scheduled scan->Packers->Uncheck all the archives and check if it works.
Thank you.

While running a full-disk scan I monitored my disk activity using the iStat Menus utility.  I was surprised to see that the com.avg.daemon process was doing an almost identical amount of reading and writing to disk.  I certainly understand that you have to read all the files; it's the writing that concerns me.  My internal drive is an SSD, and I read somewhere that they have a limited number of write cycles.  Should I be concerned about doing full-disk scans for an SSD?

Bala, thanks for the quick reply. To clarify, my question was related to doing a virus scan and nothing to do with defragmentation. Thanks again.
