I am using AVG Anti-Virus Free, v 2015.0.5315.

Is there, by any chance, a way of configuring AVG to provide a pop-up that announces that AVG has started protection each time I start the PC?

To get such a notification soon after logging on, select "component change notifications" under Options > Advanced Settings > Appearance. I posted screenshots in my answer to another question: https://support.avg.com/answers?id=906b0000000D4xGAAS
