I use AVG AntiVirus 2014 (Paid Version) to protect a number of computers.
This morning, I started my laptop after it sat idle for the past three days. I immediately checked my email.
My system is running fully updated Windows 7 Pro and fully updated Microsoft Office Professional 2007. (I use Outlook 2007 to check a number of POP 3 accounts.)
While Outlook 2007 was checking email, AVG AntiVirus 2014 performed a definitions update and a program update. I noticed that AVG shut down momentarily and reinitialized. (The taskbar icon disappeared for a couple of minutes then reappeared, and the event log confirms that AVG stopped and restarted as part of its update process.) I was prompted for an AVG reboot, and I chose to postpone for an hour.
Question: Does AVG AntiVirus 2014 (Paid Version) have safeguards built in to ensure that the program does not stop and restart itself as part of a program update if the program is performing a scan of any sort, in this case, an email scan?
My concern is that the program updated and temporarily took itself offline while my email, with numerous attachments, was being downloaded. If the email scan was interrupted by the program update process, security has been potentially compromised.
Hi Robert,
I'd like to assure you that your e-mails and computer are protected. There are multiple protection layers and computer restart is required to update the key parts of AVG protection which can't be updated when AVG is running.
Note that the e-mail attachements are also scannend when opening/saving them.
Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Thanks,
Jan
