Does AVG Internet Security 2014 need to be open to be working?

Actually, I did not see it because it was iin the "hidden icons", but after clicking the arrow to reveal said icons I can indeed see it there.  And I assume that means that it is all running in the background.  Thanks.

Can't you see the AVG icon in the toolbar on the bottom RH corner of your desktop?.

Yes, it is running in backroung, if you open AVG program you will see status.

I am used to Comodo and Kaspersky.  Each of those had a widget open on your desktop letting you know the programs were running and protecting you.  AVG apparently has no such thing, so unless I actively have the program open I have no way to know if I am protected.  Am I protected?
