Thank you for your reply, I have followed your advice and successfully installed AVG.

Just one comment by way of feedback, the installation seemed to take a long time (~20 minutes) - the on-screen message says "please wait a moment"(!) - seeming to "hang up" at around 30%, and with the final 20% being agonisingly slow. I kept my fingers crossed that it would complete successfully.

Is this usual?

Yes, please uninstall the McAfee program before installing AVG Antivirus free. Since you cannot install two Antivirus program on the same PC, It will conflict each other and cause performance issue on your computer.

I have purchased a new Dell laptop (Windows 10). I wish to download and use AVG Free. Do I need to uninstall the trial McAfee antivirus before doing so? I have not activated it.

I am glad to hear that your AVG has been installed successfully. It is usual about the pauses during the installation setup to download the data required.
