Dreaded Red X "WARNING your system is unsecured" error

Greetings,

We apologize for the discomfort this has caused you.
Firstly, we'd like to inform you that the latest versions of AVG programs are no longer compatible with the Windows XP operating system.
Please mention the program version of your AVG Antivirus, so that we can check & assist you further.
Secondly, we'd like to assure you that the security of your device has not been compromised, as no AVG shields/components were disabled.
From your description, we assume that this could be an UI error.
Once you specify the program version of your AVG Antivirus, we'll provide appropriate assistance.
Awaiting your response.

This is an error I have seen discussed elsewhere in the forums, on several occasions.  No one ever seems able to get a satisfactory fix despite attempting "Repair" and uninstalling/reinstalling.  And no one ever seems to get a straight answer on whether their system is in fact secure despite conflicting information from AVG.

I am running Windows XP, have had AVG Free version on this machine for 14 years, never a problem (other than it uses up more resources than I like but that's for another day).  Then yesterday I noticed a red X over the AVG icon in my desktop tray.  Mouse over it, and it says "AVG Antivirus: WARNING, your system is UNSECURED."

However, when I open AVG, it says with a check mark and in big green letters: "You have basic protection."  And below that "Computer Protected." and "Web & Email Protected."

I ran a virus scan after the Red X appeared, found no problems.

So here is my question:  AM I PROTECTED OR NOT?   The Red X says NO.  The AVG main screen says YES.

Which is it, please?
