This is strange, because I've just connected an external drive. It shows up normally on the Duplicate Finder and scanning and detection of duplicates works fine on the external drive, too.
When you open the Duplicate Finder, just press Browse and select the drive(s) / folders you want to scan.

Please be informed that AVG Duplicate Finder can only list out the HDD on your PC and not the external hard drive that are connected.
