E-mail scanner locks keyboard, produces error tone

Each and every time I receive e-mail, the AVG e-mail scanner interferes with my keyboard, locking it up and giving a warning tone. This condition continues until the e-mail scanner window retreats. I want this to stop. It is a real nuisance. What settings do I need to correct this behavior (beside shutting off incoming e-mail scanning)? Thank you.
