I have solved the problem myself by 'Repairing' my whole Word package.
Since there was no advice to uninstall any existing security systems before installing AVG, and no warning that Program Deactivator might cause the problem I experienced, there is no doubt in my mind that the [temporary] loss of Outlook 2016 and Word files was caused either by the installation of AVG, or the running of AVC and McAfee alongside each other, or the Program Deactivator.

Help. Successfully installed [free] AVG, but now my email (Outlook 2016) and my Word files (Windows 8.1) have both crashed. Any ideas how to put this right?

Since to check whether the issue has been caused by the AVG program we have provided you with the instructions to disable the AVG program. Please disable your AVG program temporarily and check whether you could access the Outlook and word files.
PS Sorry to have thought of it after sending my email above. I wanted to say that I can send and receive emails via Webmail and via my SMARTphone, so the problem is computer-connected. I've lost all my addresses, and some important Word files.

Thank you for your comment. No, I haven't received any blocking pop up from the AVG program. I haven't disabled the AVG program, as I'm reluctant to leave myself without any protection.
When I installed AVG, there was no message (AND THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN!) advising me to uninstall any existing internet security (I had McAfee), so AVG and McAfee were runn.ing alongside each other. So I uninstalled McAfee, but it hasn't helped. I can't access my emails (but I can see incoming emails on my SMARTphone, so they're coming through), and I can't access my Word documents.
To add insult to injury, my internet homepage is now defaulting to Yahoo, despite the fact that the default is clearly recorded as Mozilla Firefox.
Any advice appreciated. Thank you.
