Prior to the repair procedures being run, the AVG control panel indicated that my definitions WERE up-to-date, so that was not the reason the circle and exclamation point were displayed. So your reasoning for the exclamation mark are incorrect.

This morning, I find a white circle on the AVG task bar icon with an exclamation point inside,. Clicking the error message I checked the AVG control panel and everything is running with no errors reported. I am running AVG free 2016 version 16.121.7859 under Windows 7 Professional and have no other virus detection software installed. AVG last updated on October 31, 2016. What going on here?

Thank you so much for trying the repair of AVG.
We are glad to know that the issue was fixed.
The first repair that you tried is for the ZEN interface and not for the Protection program.
Since your Protection wasn't up to date you had that exclamation mark.
Please feel free to contact us if you need any assistance.
I followed the repair procedure and the following happened:
There were 2 AVG apps listed. I selected the app AVG and ran the repair procedure. I took a while, I wasn't asked to reboot and the problem was not repaired. I then selected the AVG Protection app and ran the repair procedure. It took about 5 minutes and I was then asked to reboot. After rebooting, the AVG application complained that my definitions were out of date and required and update. Clicked the Update button on the AVG control panel. After another 5 to 10 minutes, the process completed and the white circle with an exclamation point inside on the task bar icon finally was gone.
