Explorer periodically uses up memory and CPU goes crazy

Interesting… The GMER tool dies shortly after launching. The GMER site says some Malware will block it.

Michael, In order to analyze it please provide AVG with GMER (http://kb.avg.com/articles/en_US/How_to/GMER-Scan-Result/) and AVG scan result export (http://kb.avg.com/articles/en_US/How_to/AVG-scan-result-export/).

AVG Internet Security 2014 installed
For last week Explorer periodically uses up memory and CPU goes crazy.
Occasionally AVG reports blocking a Java Exploit even if no browsing is going on
Daily Scheduled and manual scan reports nothing.
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal reports nothing.
Event log shows

  • Lots Warnings for name resolution failures for "DNS Client Events". Lots of different sites.
  • Errors for Schannel

Started shortly after opening a link posted by a friend. On opening site it was clearly malevolent so I immediately killed browser.

How do I eliminate whatever is doing this?
