I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience caused to you. I would suggest you to uninstall AVG as suggested in this article https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?l=en&urlName=How-to-uninstall-AVG-AntiVirus-for-Mac to uninstall and reinstall it to check the issue.
I have had a repeating problem when scanning my Mac - I can see the scan in progress, it identifies risks (says 10 but on details it goes to 5?) and when it gets to 99% I get the following error box -
AVG AntiVirus quit unexpectedly. Click reopen to open the application again.
It then offers to send a report to Apple (which I have done).
This has been happening for a while on both my account and my wife's Mac Book too and I thought the latest update might solve it but apparently not.
Any help appreciated.
