Fake Web Shield blocks WSL DNS services

Thanks Dinesh.
Settings - General - Troubleshooting - Enable hardware assisted virtualization, was already enabled.
I've added some exceptions, but none of them have worked. I have tried adding:

  • C:\users\me\AppData\local\Packages (this is where the WSL environments live)
  • C:\Windows\System32\bash.exe (invoked by WSL)
  • C:\Windows\System32\wsl.exe (the main WSL binary)
None of these have made any difference.
If an exception is the fix, some more guidance of just what to select, would be helpful.

Thanks Dinesh.

Hi Ken,

We're glad to look into this & help you.
Please clarify whether you receive any error message from AVG during the process. If so, share us the screenshot of it for better clarity.

When enabled, "Fake Website Shield" interferes with WSL Linux DNS services, wrongly interpreting WSL DNS activity as a hacker DNS attack. WSL DNS activity is all fine when "Fake Website Shield" is disabled.

Please advise how to circumvent this, as I wish the shield to be active.

Thank you for clarifying, Ken.
Please try to set an exception for Fake website shield as mentioned in this article & let us know the outcome.
Additionally, please try enabling hardware assisted virtualization by following these steps to check if it helps:
Open AVG Internet Security - Menu - Settings - General - Troubleshooting - Enable hardware assisted virtualization.

Hi.
There are no errors in AVG, so nothing to show. If I leave the Fake Website Shield active, then WSL Linux sessions cannot resolve DNS. If I turn it off, they work just fine. Something in the Fake Website Shield is treating WSL in error.
