File Quarantine

I noticed a problem with AVG Free right after I updated to the 2016 version last fall. I've been trying to figure it out since that time but have been unsuccessful and wondered if anyone else has noticed it.

After installing a new version of the program, I always check out the Resident Shield using the Eicar test virus to ensure it is working OK. It caught the test file and dealt with it properly. However, when the test file was in a zip file, AVG handled it by quarantining the WinZip executable WINZIP32.EXE. I found this to be a most unappropriate action and certainly something AVG Free has never done in the past.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I just tried the Eicar test virus in order to get a screenshot of the result, and I'm embarassed to say AVG handled the Zip file just fine and did not quarantine the WinZip executable. I hadn't tried this in about two months but back then the problem still existed. I'm wondering if a recent update to AVG Free fixed the issue. As you can see it is working OK now.

I was finding the WINZIP32.EXE file being sent to the Virus Vault. I noticed this when I tried subsequently to startup Winzip and found the OS reporting that it could not find the executable. I then found the file in Virus Vault and had to restore it to it's previous location at which point WinZip would then work again.
I first noticed this late in 2015 when I updated to AVG Free 2016. I noticed this repeatedly up until several months ago. When I decided to post my problem to AVG Support Community several day ago and was asked to post a screen shot of what I was experiencing, I tried the Eicar test again and found AVG was now handling the problem correctly.
That is why I 'm now wondering if AVG has fixed the problem in one of it's recent updates.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for attaching the screenshot.
If the Eicar file is attached to a Winzip file then that particular file alone will be detected as a threat.
Do you mean that the entire winzip. exe application is blocked by AVG?
Did you check whether the winzip application is working after this threat detection?
