File shredder not responding

I just installed AVG Free with Zen build 1.126.1.56387, AVG Framework version 1.152.2.55487, and AVG Setup version 1.153.2.56175 on my Windows 8.1 Pro system.

When I attempt to shred a file (either from the UI menu, or the Windows Context menu), the product stops responding.  Although the Zen window is active, the AVG Antivirus Free window no longer responds.  I have to kill that window.  Before Zen came along (in the previous versions of AVG Free), the shredding window came up quickly and without issues.  What's up?
