The only thing that works from what I have tried is disabling the webshield which for some reason I don't have to do with Internet Explorer and Chrome.

Please try to disable each components https://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=Disable-AVG-Antivirus and check which component fixes the issue when disabled.
Did that. So far so good. Seems to have resolved the issue. Thanks for your help.

When I try to send email using Outlook web from the Firefox browser, I often get a failed to send error message. When I deactivate AVG I'm once again able to send a message. This doesn't happen when I use other browsers like Chrome or Internet explorer. There seems to be a compatibility issue with Firefox. Anyway around this? Thanks.

This isn't the usual behavior. In this regard, we may need to identify the component that causes the issue. To do so : Open AVG - Menu - Settings - Basic protection - Disable File Shield - Check the issue - If issue persists, re-enable file shield & repeat the same steps with other components.
Also, let us know if you're using AVG Free Antivirus or Internet Security along it's version (Open AVG - Menu - About) & Firefox, as well.
