Hello Bala
OFF-LINE disabled AVG Firewall opened Firefox and got the start screen which I could never get with the AVG Firewall on.
This proved AVG Firewall was the blocker.
Re- Enabled the AVG Firewall and went on line Firefox loaded my Home Page.
Checked a few comments on the AVG Support Community and found another person with exactly the same problem - please read below:
AVG Protection update today to AVG Internet Security does not allow Firefox of Thunderbird to open a window, although Task Manager shows they are running. (Still using Windows XP) It sometimes blocked Internet Explorer, and at other times I could not get the AVG window to open. I tried the "Repair" instructions on AVG Protection in Control Panel but that failed to initialize correctly. The interface looks like the new AVG Internet Security screen rather than the old AVG Protection one, but the listing in Control Panel was still for AVG Protection. I downloaded Internet Security anew and then found that Control Panel showed both AVG Protection and AVG Internet Security installed. I uninstalled AVG Protection and "repaired" AVG Internet Security. It still will not allow Firefox or Thunderbird to start in their own windows although they are shown as running in Task Manager.
If I click on Support in the AVG menu, it does nothing as it has blocked Firefox. However, if I turn off AVG protection, then I can start Firefox and Thunderbird an they will operate correctly when I turn AVG protection back on. Then when I click on support in the AVG menu, it takes me here.
Is there a fix that will allow me to start Firefox or Thunderbird when AVG is running or is it time for new a-v software? (A new computer that will run Windows 10 is still a little way off.)
Their solution was:
Avinash (AVG Technologies)
Hello Howard,
Please check if your firewall settings are set as suggested below or not.
Open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu->Settings->Components->Firewall->Customize->Network profile and change it to Private.
I checked my settings and one of mine was Public - changed it to private
shutdown pc into standby and when booted up again Firefox loaded all ok.
I have sent this via the Firefox Browser
Thanks AVG Support Community
Hello Balasubramanian
Thanks for the reply Firefox is not listed at all only Mozilla Maintenance which is awake
Strange that Firefox is not listed
I have had on shutdown "ns AppShell not responding" and this has terminated on shutdown.
ns Appshell I believe is linked with the Firefox browser.
Firefox is listed as an exeption in the firewire
Any more ideas? Please

Have AVG Ultimate installed on Laptop, Firefox does not open or display but runs in the background (as seen on Task Manager) suspect an AVG Setting is blocking this. Firefox and all profiles have been uninstalled and re-install and .ini file is correct
Have installed Ultimate on an older PC with XP SP3 then installed Firefox which runs OK
Thank you for the information.
Please "Start" the service of "Mozilla Maintenance" that you found in services window and check whether it resolves the issue.
To disable AVG Internet Security temporarily, follow the steps as mentioned in this article: http://support.avg.com/SupportArticleView?urlname=How-to-use-Passive-Mode .
Thank you for the detailed information.
Try (disabling AVG Internet Security) temporarily and check whether you are able to access Firefox.
You can also try restarting Firefox service by following below mentioned steps:
1) Open RUN command by pressing Windows and R keys together.
2 ) In Run window, type as "services.msc" without quotes and press Enter key.
3) In services window, search for Firefox and right click on it.
4) Select "Start" or "Restart" which is available and check whether you are able to access Firefox.
Keep us informed about the status.
