Firefox/thunderbird crashing and loss of internet connection

I have just been on to Microsoft for the third time in as many months with a persistent issue of my Firefox browser crashing such that I am totally unable to gain access to the internet. On each occasion Microsoft were able to take control after giving me instrution to somehow get in to my PC "through the back door"and got me up and running. On two of the three occasions removal of my AVG anti virus resolved the problem and the last call was handled by a level 2 technician and his view was that AVG is blocking access to my ISP. I am now running with Windows defender, having removed AVG and unless I can get comfort/a guarantee from AVG that reloading my paid for antivirus software, do not feel confident in reinstalling again. Not very happy!
