Hello Eric,
AVG firewall will block/allow the applications installed on your computer from accessing Internet. This will not stop USB devices from connecting on your computer.
Have you disabled AVG firewall and checked if you are able to access this USB devices?
To disable AVG firewall, open AVG Internet Security, click on Menu->Settings->Components->Firewall.
From here disable the component and let me know the status.

I just installed AVG internet security and the firewall is blocking a portable device that is attached to my computer via usb. How can I prevent this from happening?

I have disabled the AVG firewall and the portable devise works fine. So it must have something to do with the firewall.
