Firewall blocks all FTP applications, even when they have been allowed

Alan,

Sadly, your reply lends little help. I read the posted link and the poster had a different problem from mine; he found that turning off the Firewall made no difference and he had to completely turn off AVG before he could FTP. He also noted that his problem is still unresolved… In his case it looked like a problem in the kernel or core of AVG, in mine it is definitely in the Firewall.

I can disable AVG but NOT disable the Firewall and I am blocked. If I disable
both the Firewall and AVG, everything works. I haven't found a way to disable only the Firewall, other than to "allow everything" and if I do that everything works.

But the point is that SOMETHING must have caused this. I did upgrade SmartFTP to a new version, but that wouldn't affect WS_FTP. There have been numerous updates to AVG but I think they are just signature files rather than code updates.

I am running the paid version of AVG 2015 on a Windows XP (SP3) machine that has been fully updated before they stopped the updates. Everything worked fine until about a week ago. Most things still work fine but now I cannot use FTP. If I try to connect with FTP it just shows "connecting" until it times out. Stop the Firewall and it connects instantly.

Surely SOMEBODY at AVG must know something about the Firewall internals and why the FTP protocol is being blocked?

Thanks for your response.

Pete.

Over the last few days AVG has started preventing FTP software from connecting to various domains. It happens with WS_FTP AND with SmartFTP. I whitelisted one of these domains but it makes no difference. I tried resetting the firewall to default and rebooting, as described in the KB; that didn't fix it.

The list of allowed applications shows both of these applications and they are marked as ALLOW, but they are blocked when I try to use them.

If I switch off the Firewall (disable it temporarily), everything works fine.

I tried changing to "interactive mode" and AVG correctly queried and accepted my permission for Chrome and IE.  (And they both work after beiong allowed). It also queried and accepted for WS_FTP, but it still didn't work even after being allowed. It never queried SmartFP, just prevented it connecting, even though it shows in the application list as "ALLOWED".

It is really irritating to have to remember to turn off the firewall every time I need to update a web site, and I never used to have to. I believe that a recent update somewhere has changed something. I don't want to discard the firewall.

Can anybody help, please?

Pete.
