Hello John,
We really appreciate your valuable efforts which you have taken to fix it. Please try to reinstall your AVG Internet Security to resolve the issue earliest.We would request you  to remove previously installed program traces of (AVG 2015 or AVG 2014)from your system using AVG Remover tool and then try to reinstall AVG Internet Security.
Note: If you have installed any other conflicting programs like AVAST, NORTON, McAfee or KASPERSKY  try to uninstall it.
Once you have uninstalled from your system,try to follow the steps which mentioned below.
Remover and Download:
1) To download AVG remover tool, please click on this link:  http://aa-download.avg.com/filedir/util/AVG_Remover.exe
2) Run the downloaded file and follow the onscreen instructions.
3) Restart your PC when the restart option is displayed on the remover tool screen.
NOTE: Once you have logged into your PC after the restart, please go to C:\ drive and delete the "AVG REMOVER" folder manually.

I followed your instructions and received the following error message:

'MFA is already running and only one instance is allowed at a time Error code: 0xE001D026'.

I'm still with a Firewall.

I followed the instrcvutions and found 2 Tssks in Task Manager which seemed to meet the criteria. I paused them both and still I can't run the update. I am therefore without a Firewall it seems?

I'm being told that my Firewall is not up to date and needs to be installed so I am not protected. However, when I try to run the update I receive the following error message: 'Update Failed. Update has detected running installation. Complete that installation before starting update'. I've tried closing down all applications, several times and re-running the update, but nothing happens and I'm still not protected.
