QUESTION : Support says that I should open avg and go to options inorder to MANUALLY UPDATE the ANTI VIRUS - OPTIONS don't seem to exist. I'm aware it is supposed to update automatically. Please clarify.
Kieran,
when you open the main screen and open the AVG Anti-Virus Free part, where it says you have Basic Protection etc, at the bottom left corner it has "Last Computer Scan" and "Virus definition". To the right of the Virus definition line is a TOO SMALL update icon (circle with curly arrow). Click that and it will go to an update box and do the 1st part (virus database) automatically, and then you can click the update button on the 2nd section to check for program updates.
Dunno what it is with interface designers making such small buttons for stuff. Plenty of room there for an easier to see button, WITH TEXT like the wrongly named 'fix computer performance' button has (like 'Manual Update', would that kill them to do?), and a better color wouldn't hurt too. Hope that helps.
Kieran, Don't know whether this is actually now available in AVG 2017 free version?.

Hello Kieran,
Thank you for replying us back. Please be informed that you might have installed our latest 2017 version of the AVG program. Once you open the AVG Free program you could find the Menu option on the right top corner.
Please click on it.
Select settings and click on Update.
You will be provided with the options to update both the Virus definition and the Program.
Please feel free to contact us for further assistance.
Thank you.
